Causes of Yeast Infections

Anyone is susceptible to a yeast infection, but there are factors that increase your chances of contracting the condition, and therefore it is wise to find out what the yeast infection causes are. Woman are more likely to suffer from a yeast infection or Candida overgrowth, as it is also called, and they generally affect the vaginal area. This is because there is always some yeast and bacteria in this part of the body, and if the immune system is low, which is one of the yeast infection causes, the chances of  a urinary tract infection increases. Even though they are more likely to happen to adult females, yeast infections can also occur in men and children.

An infection can occur when the yeast in the body increases and overtakes the good bacteria, causing the classic symptoms of itching, burning, and irritation to the area. Learning what causes this bacterial imbalance is important to help prevent a yeast infection from happening. There are a variety of factors that can cause a yeast infection, or worse, a urinary tract infection, so educating yourself on them can be beneficial to your health.

- Weak Immune System – With any disorder, a low immunity can contribute to a yeast infection. This can be contributed to poor eating habits, low physical activity, or certain medications – some of the main yeast infection causes.

- Diabetes – Diabetics are more susceptible to yeast infections because of the rise in their blood sugar from time to time. Increased glucose levels are beneficial to Candida, the substance that causes a yeast infection.

- Clothing – Wearing ill fitting clothing can trap moisture around the genitals, helping the bacteria to multiply. It is important to wear properly fitting cotton garments, especially during hot, humid weather, to allow air flow and reduce sweating – these yeast infection causes can easily be eliminated.

- Personal Care Products – Some perfumes, soaps, and menstrual products have been known to offset the balance between the yeast and good bacteria in the body. This usually works in the way of creating more Candida which will take over and create an infection. Sexual lubricants and spermicides can also disturb the balance – other ways to minimize more yeast infection causes.

- Pregnancy – This is just another factor that causes women to be more likely to contract a yeast infection. When pregnant, hormone levels in the body changes, sparking a wealth of possible problems, including yeast infections.

- Sexual Intercourse with infected partners – Though a yeast infection is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease, it is possible for a man to contract the infection if he has sex with a woman who is currently dealing with the condition, or vice versa. It is important not to have any sexual relations whilst infected, as it can worsen the problem.

Yeast infections are very common among women. Studies show that approximately 75% of woman will suffer from at least one occurrence during their lifetime. It is also possible for men and children to get a urinary tract infection, but the percentage is lower. Though the symptoms can be be very uncomfortable, the infections are curable and can be completely eliminated in just a few days with the right treatment.
